Into the Dark Land

  1. INTO THE DARK LAND - A black ink and black color pencil on 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "We Are All Legends," by Darrell Schweitzer, published by Donning Starblaze Editions, 1981.

    Darrell Schweitzer writes fantasy tales in the tradition of Lord Dunsany, Clark Ashton Smith and Jack Vance. They are all marvellous stylists, their fantasy tales are written with a flow of colorful words uniquely arranged to present our minds with amazing images and events that we ourselves are incapable of imagining . . .

    In Darrell Schweitzer's story, "Between Night and Morning," he opens the tale with a word about Velas Ven, the great story-teller;

    "Wherever he went , people would cry out, Velas! Velas!
    Speak to us of wonders! Sometimes he would hire a boy
    to go out before him, alternately blowing a trumpet and
    shouting, "Gather and listen! Velas Ven is coming".

    Isn't that why we read fantasy stories, to fulfill the wanting in us to experience something wonderful that the real world cannot give us?
    And though it be fantasy, it is who we are in spirit, and who we want to be.
